The Australia Student VISA is divided into 8 subclasses:

  • Independent ELICOS VISA (Subclass 570): For International Students travelling to Australasia to study, on an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS).
  • Schools Sector VISA (Subclass 571): For children travelling to Australia to study at a primary or secondary school.
  • Vocational Education and Training Sector VISA (subclass 572): For International Students travelling to Australia to study towards a vocational or training qualification, such as a:
  • Certificate I, II, III, or IV
  • VET Diploma
  • Advanced VET Diploma
  • Vocational Graduate Certificate
  • Vocational Graduate Diploma
  • Higher Education Sector VISA (Subclass 573): For International Students travelling to Australia to study towards a higher education qualification, such as a:
  • Associate’s Degree
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Graduate certificate
  • Graduate Diploma
  • Master’s degree (taught/coursework based only)
  • Higher Education diploma/advanced diploma
  • Postgraduate Research Sector VISA (Subclass 574): For International Students travelling to Australia to study, towards a research-based Master’s or Doctoral degree.
  • Non-Award Sector VISA (Subclass 575): For international students travelling to Australia to study towards a non-award foundation course or other full-time course which does not lead to an Australian award.
  • Foreign Affairs or Defense Sector VISA (Subclass 576): For International Students who are sponsored by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, or Australia’s Department of Defense, to study towards any type of course in Australia.
  • Student Guardian VISA (Subclass 580): For parents and guardians of international students under the age of 18 who are studying in Australia. In some circumstance’s Guardians of Students over the age of 18 may also be granted this VISA.

Eligibility For The Australia Student VISA

  • Be a certain age (school student)
  • Be enrolled in a course of study and provide evidence
  • Make welfare arrangements if you are under 18 years
  • Meet English language requirements
  • Have adequate Health Insurance
  • Have not held a certain VISA
  • Have enough money for your stay: You must have enough money to pay for your stay in Australia.
  • Be a genuine temporary entrant: You must be a genuine temporary entrant and intend to return home after studying in Australia.
  • Meet the Australian character requirement: You and family members aged 16 years and over who apply for the VISA must meet the Australian character requirement.
  • Meet the Australian health requirement: You and any family members who apply for the VISA must meet the Australian health requirement.
  • Sign the Australian values statement: If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
    • have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet and
    • sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws
  • Have paid back your debt to the Australian Government: If you or any family members (including those who don’t apply for the VISA with you) owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
  • Not have had a VISA cancelled or a previous application refused: You might not be granted this VISA if you have had a VISA cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
  • Best interests of the child: The Australian Government might not grant this VISA if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

Application Procedures

Australia Student VISA Application

After confirming your eligibility, you can now proceed to apply for the Australian Student VISA. The application Procedure is very simple.

You need to follow the steps below;

  1. Before you Apply: Organize health exams, Have a valid passport.
  2. Gather your documents: Before Applying, you must gather the needed documents .
  3. Apply for the VISA: if you are applying outside the country, the application must be done online. This is what you’ll do:
  • Create or log in to ImmiAccount
  • Attach documents
  • Pay the VISA application charge
  1. After you Apply: After you have applied, this are the things you must do
  • Biometrics

  • Stay lawful in Australia
  • Travel after you apply
  • Add family members

  • Tell us if things change
  1. VISA outcome: The Australian Government will let you know in writing their decision about your VISA application. They will tell you:
  • your VISA grant number
  • the date your VISA expires
  • your VISA conditions

Keep a copy of the decision with you when in Australia.

Note: If they refuse your VISA, they will let you know in writing. They will tell you why they refused and whether you have a right to a review of the decision. Other Things To Note

  • On reaching the Australia, you must complete and get your Incoming Passenger Card ( IPC) at the border.
  • What you can do when you have this VISA;
    • participate in an eligible course of study in Australia
    • travel in and out of Australia
    • work up to 40 hours every 2-week period once your course starts.
  • The Australia Student VISA is a temporary VISA. You can stay in Australia until the date the Australian Government have told you. The Student VISA grant period will depend on the type of course and its length.
  • You cannot stay in Australia longer by extending this VISA. To continue studying in Australia, you must apply for a new Student VISA.
  • If your Student VISA will expire before your graduation, you might be able to apply for another VISA that meets your circumstances such as a visitor VISA. You will need a letter from your education provider which states the date of your graduation.
  • You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while the VISA is valid. Time spent outside Australia does not extend the VISA.
  • To prove you have a VISA and show your conditions to someone, use VEVO .
  • Except in limited circumstances, you and your family members cannot work until your course has started. When your course is in session:
    • you can work 40 hours in a 2 week period.
    • your family can work but not more than 40 hours per fortnight

The VISA costs from AUD620 for the main applicant, unless they are exempt. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the VISA. You might also have to pay other costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.

Your application can take longer to process if:

  • you do not fill it in correctly
  • you do not include all the documents we need or we need more information from you
  • it takes the Australian government time to verify your information

Note: They cannot process your application if you do not pay the correct VISA application charge. They will notify you if that is the case.
