US Business VISA | US B1 VISA

The B1 VISA is a Non-Immigrant US VISA that permits visitors to enter the United States for Business purposes.

How Do I know That I Am Eligible For The US B1 VISA?

This is a question many Business persons asks, and the answer is so simple.

Unlike Other types of the US VISA, it’s eligibility requirements are not really tough. However, you have to make sure that you fulfil the following, before you qualify to Apply for the VISA;

  • Your intention on visiting the United States is Business-related.
  • You are financially capable; that is, you have enough finances to cover your stay in the United States.
  • You intend to return to your Home Country as soon as your VISA expires, and you do not intend to stay in the United States.

Application Procedures For The US Business VISA

US B1 VISA Application

After you’ve checked your eligibility, and confirmed that you are qualified to apply for the US B1 VISA, you can then proceed to apply for the VISA.

The following steps will be taken for a successful application.

  • Submit Form DS-160: You can fill the DS-160 form online, through the Consular Electronic Application Center. Fill in the sections for your US B1 VISA and then submit it online. After you submit it, you will get a verification page and code which you need for your documents file.
  • Pay VISA fees: To continue with your application, you must pay the US B1 VISA fee. The application fee for the US Business VISA is $160. You might have to pay other fees depending on your Country’s relationship with the US. These are known as VISA issuance fees and they vary from Country to Country.

Note: When you pay all the applicable fees, make sure to save the receipts and add them to your B1 VISA Documents file.

  • Schedule Your US B1 VISA interview: Every applicant that is between 14 and 79 years of age, must go through a US Business VISA interview at the US Embassy they are applying in. To get this interview, you must schedule it through your Country’s US Embassy. Due to the high workload that they have, make sure you schedule it as soon as possible. When this procedure is done, you will get an interview confirmation letter which you need to bring to the interview.
  • Compile Your B1 VISA document file: You need to get your documents ready for the B1 VISA application.

  • The Form DS-160 confirmation page and code.
  • Your valid passport; You must possess a passport which is six months valid beyond your planned stay in the US.
  • Details of your social media accounts; A list of the social media that you use, and the name of your account in each.
  • The interview confirmation page.
  • A photo that complies with the US VISA photo requirements.
  • A letter which describes the purpose of your trip.
  • Financial or Bank statements to prove you have the finances to stay in the US.
  • Ties to your Home Country such as family, job contract, lease, or property deed, which prove you will return.
  • Criminal records or letters from Authorities stating that you do not have prior convictions.
  • If you have visited the US before, bring documents relevant to your prior visits.
  • If you work, bring a letter from your employer and pay-slips for the last three months.
  • A letter from the Company detailing the purpose of the trip and your job position.
  • Attend The VISA Interview: During the interview session, a US Embassy official will ask you questions about your background, and why you want to go to the US. They will go through your documents to ensure that everything is in order.

Note: The interviews do not last long, but make sure to disclose all necessary information to avoid problems later on.

US B1 VISA Processing Time And Validity

US Business VISA

  • Processing times for the US Business VISA, differ from Country to Country. It depends on the workload that the US Embassy where you applied has. The B1 VISA may take a few Weeks, up to a few Months to process. But if you do not hear from the Embassy, exercise patience and wait for them to inform you on whether you got the VISA or not.
  • The maximum duration of stay on a B1 VISA is 6 months. During that time, you can travel throughout the US or for any other purpose. But know that as soon as your VISA expires, you must return to your Home Country.

Can I Extend My US B1 VISA?

At the end of 6 months, you are to return to your Home Country, and not stay in the United States past the expiration date of your VISA.

But, if you want a B1 VISA extension, you must work with your employer on that. You must prove that you have not completed all the Business that you need to complete with a B1 VISA.

You must also get letters of confirmation from your Employer or Company, that proves your stay in the US is essential for Business.

Note: You are not allowed to work for a US Company and earn income, so you must also prove financial stability and that you have enough money to stay in the United States.

Can My Family Member Join Me?


Since the B1 VISA is an individual Temporary VISA, it does not have dependent VISAs. This means that your spouse, children, or other family members cannot join you in the United States, if you are the only one that has the B1 VISA.

In order to be able to join you, they must apply for the B2 VISA or the US Tourist VISA.
